Funded by the British Council and Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology under Research Environment Links- Going Global Partnerships, and in collaboration with Institute for Food, Nutrition and Health (IFNH), University of Reading, The United Kingdom, N2RTU was established in 2022 to promote Nutrigenetics and Nutrigenomics research in Malaysia through knowledge and technology transfer. It is a not-for-profit organization and the members are nutritionists, dietitians, academia, genetic epidemiologists, public health and other allied health professionals.

N2RTU has two main objectives:

  • Promote, advance, and disseminate knowledge on nutrigenetics and nutrigenomics. Afford capacity building and create a nutrigenetics research ecosystem through knowledge & technology transfer
  • Nutritional genomics, an extension of precision medicine envisages the bidirectional linkage between how genetic variation influences the body’s nutrient response (nutrigenetics) and how nutrients influence genes (nutrigenomics). In line with its objectives, N2RTU aims to train health care professionals and academia to conduct and translate genetic data into medical treatment and prevention.

As a professional organization, N2RTU is driven by the simple belief – the more health professionals understand nutritional genomics, the better they can apply for disease prevention and treatment enroute to precision nutrition. For that reason, N2RTU supports the advancement of nutrigenetics and nutrigenomics research, sharing practical insights and important discoveries for the benefits of all. N2RTU would serve as a focal point of change for transition to nutrigenetics approach and bring effective change in the welfare of the society. Healthcare individuals can apply genetic knowledge with an appropriate dietary regimen, physical activity, and pharmaceuticals. Significant achievement with gain in scientific knowledge would yield a huge economic impact leading to cost-effective disease prevention means, and reduced health care costs of vulnerable populations (women, children, adolescents, young adults) and urban population inflicted with polygenic diseases. This initiative falls in line with the National Key Priority Area under the National Plan of Action for Nutrition Malaysia (NPANM III, 2016-2025) and guided by Sustainable Development Goals and Malaysia’s Vision 2030. Strategic partnerships with multi-stakeholders within Malaysia and UK will be established to sustain its activities.

In line with its objectives, the N2RTU sets to carry out a variety of activities for professionals and the community:

  • Promotion, advancement and dissemination of knowledge in nutritional genomics, the
  • emerging discipline in nutritional science
  • Support government in development of policies and programmes in implementing
  • personalized nutrition
  • Promotion of community nutrition through outreach and extension activities
  • Publication of educational materials pertaining to nutrigenetics and nutrigenomics
  • Regional and international collaborations / networks

N2RTU also extend its support to the Government’s efforts in promoting healthy nutrition practices in the society to alleviate triple burden of malnutrition (underweight overweight and micronutrient malnutrition) along with other nutrient deficiencies and diet-related chronic diseases in the country (e.g. obesity, diabetes, hypertension and coronary heart disease).
